A companion to the Kiwi Hit Disc, the Kiwi Talk Disc was a
tool
designed for radio programmers. It contains introductions and
comments by the artists, usually about the referenced song but
sometimes on
music or life in general; radio programmers were encouraged to be
creative with the contents.
The first produced disc appears to be KTD10, with the Talk
Disc number
matching the companion Kiwi Hit Disc volume number. No
earlier
reference
exists in either the National Library collection or Ngā Taonga Sound
& Vision archives; KTD10 seems to have been a concept trial as
there is no KTD11 listed
in any national collection covering the
period.
Talk Discs also accompanied every
CD in Kiwi Gold Disc box
sets
I & II.
One can
only imagine the logistics nightmare of
coordinating artists for interview recording,
and tight
timeframes for disc production to get these prepared in time for
distribution along with their corresponding
Kiwi Hit Disc eventually lead to the demise of the Talk Disc concept
following the last separate release,
KTD21.
Talk Disc-esque tracks were included for New Zealand Music Week,
(later New Zealand Music Month) on KHD25 (1997),
KHD47 (2001), KHD59 (2003) and
KHD65 (2004).
These were later
followed with separate "NZ Music Month NZ Artist IDs" discs - of which
we're currently unsure of how many or when they were released.
